When you drive a foreign car or any type of model that is not readily available in your area, you want to consider using a foreign mechanic. This doesn't refer to the nationality of that mechanic; rather, it means a shop that specializes in foreign cars. There are many good reasons why a foreign or rare car should be repaired and maintained by a shop that is experienced with that model in particular; note a few of those reasons here.
Body repairs
Your car repair may include some repairs to the body of your vehicle; this is often best left to someone who knows the construction of that car, as car manufacturers use different types of paint for cars and their frames will be constructed differently as well. Your car may be a good candidate for paintless dent repair, where a bump or dent is gently massaged out without the need for fillers or putty. If your mechanic doesn't know that, he or she may start drilling or otherwise trying to repair a dent with added materials that aren't necessary and which can mean a repair that doesn't last. If your mechanic doesn't know the material used for the frame of the car, he or she might start grinding away at rusted area or other spots and damage the aluminum inside or paint outside.
Longevity of the car and repairs
Do you know the expected lifespan of your particular car and what problems you might experience with it a year from now or five years from now? A mechanic experienced with certain models of cars can tell you if those cars are likely to need transmission repair or if the engine doesn't typically last after a certain number of miles or kilometers. In turn, you can decide if it's worth spending the money on certain repairs or if there is work you should have done now.
As an example, if your mechanic knows that your car tends to have problems with the transmission, they may suggest that you have the transmission flushed rather than simply topped off. This can help keep it in tiptop shape. If your mechanic knows your engine probably won't last another year because your model of car is known to blow gaskets, you may decide to put off replacing certain parts in favor of just repairing them to save money since you may not keep the car much longer. You usually cannot get that type of useful information with a mechanic who is not familiar with your model of car.
If your foreign car is having any issues, don't hesitate to take it to a foreign car service in your area.
